2018 Reading Goals – End of Year Review

At the beginning of the year I set myself some reading goals for 2018. Nothing too strict, I just thought about what I wanted to achieve or improve, and how I wanted my reading to evolve over the year. Back then these goals felt attainable, and meant only small changes to the way I did things previously. Now the year is over, I thought it’d be interesting to revisit the goals I set, and see how I did with them before I decide on my goals for 2019.

Read at least 75 Books

Miraculously I managed to reach this goal with a few months to spare, despite some pretty bad reading slumps. I actually ended the year with 100 books read, just. I try not to pressure myself too much with the quantity of books I read, because it normally leads to me rushing through and picking shorter books on purpose, for the sake of numbers, rather than just reading for enjoyment.

Be More Selective with my Book Buying

I’m getting much better at this, I’ve managed to read more than half of the books that I’ve bought so far this year, which is a big improvement. I’ve also been more strict with myself when it comes with deals, cover buys and impulse purchases. It helped that I stopped getting as many subscription boxes when I realised that I wasn’t getting around to reading many of the books that I got in them. There’s still room for improvement, but I’m quite happy with how this goal is going so far. I thought I’d struggle with it a lot more than I have been, hopefully I’ll be able to keep up with it in 2019.

Read More Backlist/Owned Books

Honestly, I’ve not done very well with this goal this year, although I am still working on it. I’ve been doing a bit better with it in the past few months, managing to read a few books that have been on my TBR for years. I’m hoping to prioritize some more back-list titles going forward, I have a few lists that I’m working from to help motivate myself.

Catch Up on Some Series

I know that I’ve not done well on this one, in fact, if anything, I’ve started even more series. I really need to get better at keeping up with, and finishing series. Why am I like this.

Attain & Maintain a 60% Feedback Ratio on Netgalley

I’ve failed at this one completely this year. I’ve managed to keep it fairly steady,  I’m currently at 56%. I’ve stopped my self from requesting books quite so excessively to try to manage things, and currently I’m not requesting books at all until I get back into reading on my phone, which I’ve been struggling with lately. I hope I can get back on track with this goal in the coming year.

  1. It sounds like you did pretty well in reaching your goals this year – well done!
I always review some books on Netgalley, then reward myself by having a look at available titles and ‘accidentally’ requesting tonnes more so it’s difficult to get caught up!
Yet, I will review everything on there eventually and I have read so many books that I might not otherwise have been able to access that I can’t regret it too much!
